CHEESEBURGER

The half eaten
Cheeseburger was inviting
More inviting
Than the shame of the children’s laughter
Scornful cruelty
French fries and drinks thrown at me
Have a complete meal at Mickey D’s
Said the teenage demi gods of hope

Those bright shining moments
Just before the cherry is popped
before the first eye gets socked
Before the first time
life kicks you in the teeth

These beautiful terrible creatures
how I wanted to tear into them
cut them with the
ragged jack-knife
sink my
broken teeth
into their soft cheek
disfigure
impress rage
so as to always be remembered
a cruel taunting reminder
of the awaiting
maws of age and fate
